How To Go About Landscaping For A Pool

Many people like the idea of having a pool in their backyard. If you do as well, you must realize that it takes either a lot of work or a lot of money to set up. Then there is the continuous maintenance of the pool and its water. If you are concerned that you will lose all of your garden, there is no need, because you can design your pool so that there is a fair bit of vegetation incorporated into it. In deed, there are many suggestions you can use when landscaping for a pool.

When landscaping for a pool, you need to have a design to work to. You can either have a tailor-made drawing drawn up for your backyard, you could make your own design or you could use one out of a periodical. There is no reason why you can not create your own blueprint. The best way to start would be to get some suggestions from landscaping publications or other household periodicals.

The best way of going about landscaping for a pool is to draw the exact size and shape of your backyard on a piece of graph paper to scale. Plot in any immovable objects such as downpipes, a shed or septic tank. If that constrains the size of your pool too much, you can have these objects moved if need be. Nothing is without a solution, but it does add to the cost. Once you have sufficient space, you are all set to start planning.

Copy and modify drawings from periodicals by all means, but if you feel that you are not up to it, have the design made for you. A local architect can do it, or phone the local technical college and ask one of the lecturers or students to draw it for you. It is not as costly as you might think. If you have the design done for you, make sure that you have thought about what you want and make sure that the drawer knows about it.

If you want lots of flowers, it is best to have raised flower beds. This will prevent your flowers from spreading too far and will allow you greater control. The plants will have to be quite hardy and resistant to chemicals such as chlorine. The atmosphere will be more humid around the pool as well.

You will need some shaded area for when it is really hot. Trees are a good idea, but they can take a very long time to grow. Palms look great by a pool, but some species can take ten years to grow high enough. You could explore the possibilities of planting semi-mature trees or look for faster growing varieties. In the meantime, you could set up a grass-roofed lean-to or some umbrellas.

Lighting is also an important consideration. The pool should be floodlit at night to prevent people falling in it at night, but not only for that reason, it looks good too. Accent lighting on the plants and trees really brings atmosphere to the pool and these lights can be solar powered so that you can move them around should you want to.

How You Could Landscape Your Garden In The Texas Style

Most people just let their garden mature naturally in that they do not select a particular style. This is all right, but it can become a hodge-podge, if not looked after. Some people, however, consciously choose to landscape their garden according to a certain style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are quite simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a grand scale, so you would be excused for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a large garden.

It is perhaps easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a bigger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first points to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the landscape closely resembles desert. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you might call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your land, if you only have a small plot and the average temperature will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets chilly at night. This will permit you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do bloom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several types that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you live.

Cacti yield spectacular flowers when they bloom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can start looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from publications, but a few suggestions are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, working or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are often overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all sorts of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are fantastic conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to create a rock garden and this will increase the choice of plant life that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that often grow in this austere environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

Saint Croix: One Of The US Virgin Islands

Saint Croix is the biggest of the US Virgin Islands although the capital city, Charlotte Amelie, is located on St Thomas. Saint Croix itself has two towns Frederiksted (pop. 830) and Christiansted (pop. 3,000). The name of the island comes from the earlier Spanish name given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 – Santa Cruz or ‘Holy Cross’. As Santa Cruz, Saint Croix gets a lot of mention in swashbuckling stories of pirates and buccaneers sailing on the Spanish Main.

The populace before the Europeans arrived was Arawak and Carib and they had likely been there since about 5000 BC. After 1493 the population of the Caribbean got embroiled in a 100 years war with the Spanish and the kind of people living on the island changed forever.

Saint Croix has been owned and therefore predominantly occupied by the Spanish, The British, the French, the Dutch, the Maltese and the Danish all of whom had slaves and plantations

The slaves were freed in 1848, but many chose to remain on Saint Croix. Descendants of slaves still live on the island. The total population of the island is now roughly 60,000.

English is the official language and is the most commonly spoken, although there is also some Spanish, French Creole and Virgin islands Creole, better known as Crucian, which is spoken by most people in informal situations.

This Hispanic section of the Crucian population is mostly of Puerto Rican lineage. The US bought Vieques from Puerto Rico during the Second World War and evicted its inhabitants. Many moved to St Croix because of its similarity to Vieques. These people have fitted in well, but also kept a few of their old ways. They usually speak a mixture of Spanish and Crucian English in a unique form of Spanglish.

Continental Americans make up about 13% of the population and mostly live on the eastern side of St Croix. Arab Palestinians are also a sizeable minority owning most of the petrol stations and supermarkets on St Croix. Other modern immigrants have come from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Philippines.

There has been some tension between immigrants and those calling themselves ‘real Crucians’, but it has largely evaporated because of to intermarriage. There have been attempts to define a ‘real Crucian’.

The issue seems to have been sorted out when in 2009, the proposed U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution voted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention laid down three definitions of U.S. Virgin Islanders: “Ancestral Native Virgin Islander”, who have ancestral ties (and their descendants); “Native Virgin Islander”, who were born on the island (and their descendants); and “Virgin Islander”, who are any United States citizen who has lived in the region for five years.

Christianity, in the guise of Protestantism is the main religion, although the Hispanic community is Roman Catholic. There are also small groups of Jews and followers of Rastafari, Islam.

Contact Lenses Versus Specs

Has your eyesight deteriorated to the stage where you have to wear spectacles? Are you happy about that? Well, there are a number of alternatives available nowadays, so you do have other choices. If you do not want to undergo surgery, you can still choose contact lenses. In fact, contact lenses have been a feasible alternative to spectacles for decades.

Surgery can be a more permanent solution to problems with eyesight, but for various reasons, some people do not like to take up this option. This leaves contact lenses as the best alternative. The first thing to notice about contact lenses is that most people will not know that you are wearing them. This is very important to some people and not significant to others at all.

Contact lenses provide better all-round or peripheral vision than spectacles. When you look to the side wearing glasses, there is no glass there, but contact lenses cover your entire pupil so that your vision is closer to normal. This is safer if you are driving a car or riding a bike or even trying to cross a road.

Another problem that many people find with glasses is that they leave indentations on the nose. Some people find these ugly. Spectacles also need frequent cleaning, which numerous people find maddening, whereas contact lenses are cleaned by the eyes’ normal cleaning system – in other words, automatically.

Stylists also think that their prescription spectacles have to go with what they are wearing. This can mean that you have to have a dozen pairs of glasses. If your eyesight deteriorates further, which is fairly probable, all those specs will have to be up-graded as well. This is not true with contact lenses of course.

Both glasses and contact lenses can adjust for astigmatism or bad eyesight, which comes to most people after the age of forty. Sometimes earlier and occasionally later, but it will happen. Your choice, if you do not want to undergo surgery, is whether you would rather wear spectacles or contact lenses.

In the past, contact lenses were very expensive, which is why many people still discount using them, but in fact it is no longer true. Contact lenses are more costly, but not much more now. In fact, you can buy disposable contact lenses and many people do do that.

The fact is that there are better alternatives to wearing either contacts or specs, but most people do not know it. It is possible these days to have one eye operation and never have to wear glasses again. Or you could have laser surgery and almost certainly not need specs again for ten or twenty years, but some people are adverse to having surgery and so they opt for glasses or contacts.

In the long run, surgery is almost definitely less costly than wearing contact lenses and wearing contact lenses is almost definitely cheaper than wearing spectacles, but it is the same with most things, people merely look at the up-front costs and cheaper is rarely better.

Are Air Purifiers Worth The Money?

Most families have managed without an air purifier for generations – hundreds or even thousands of years, so what, you may be asking yourself is the hurry to get one now? And it is true, there is a bit of a buzz about air purifiers at the moment. But do they work well and are they worth the money?

The answers to both of these questions are not simple, but everyone would have to agree that the motor turns when you plug them in, so in that way they do all work. Whether they are effective or not depends on what you buy. There are some very effective air purifying units and there is a lot of rubbish too.

The very useless ones are the very cheap models, that are just not powerful enough and do not even enclose adequate filters, but leaving those aside, there are very good portable air purifiers and very good central air purifier systems.

So, the first thing you have to determine is whether you want a central or portable air purifying system. If you want to purify the air in your office at work or your caravan or trailer, then a good portable purifier will do the job very well. The reason why a portable purifier is not so good for the home is size. Your house is just too large for one portable air purifying unit.

If you locked yourself up in one room, then OK, but as soon as you open the door, or someone walks into the room, you have lost a lot of your clean air. Therefore, if you are thinking about purifying the air in your house, you really ought to go for a central system, particularly if you already have ducting in place for a central heating or central air conditioning system.

If you are lucky enough to have such a system then a powerful and very efficient air purification system can be fitted near your existing blower in minutes in most cases. These systems will purify the air in your whole home at the same time, meaning that you can walk about your house, go about your daily business and leave interconnecting doors open at leisure. It is the only way to go if you have active children. This is often the cheapest option too, surprisingly.

If you are going to purchase a portable model, note the measurements of the largest room you are likely to use it in and work out the volume of air in that room (length x width x height). You will have to check that whichever air purifier you get can deal with that volume of air. That information will be in sales literature. The cost of filters is an essential aspect in the overall cost of a purifier. How much are they and how often do they need to be changed? Can they be cleaned a few times before requiring to be changed?

Think about why you want an air purifier. Is it because you want to prevent a specific allergy? Is it because there is a smoker in the house? Is it because of animals? Or is it just because of increasing levels of general pollution from cars and industry? Whatever the reason, make sure that the air purification system you are thinking about purchasing can take filters that can remove those substances from the air. Not all filters are identical – not all filters can filter everything.
